Set A Goal & Actually Achieve It

By Zak Nothling - CF East Tamaki and Renegade Performance Coach

We have all set goals before and chances are if you're reading this you didn't achieve them or not in their entirety.

I was taught to set goals from a really early age- all through my Jr sports career I remember setting goals from as young as 10. Im sure you have already set goals before but I would like you to try this new way. It is in no way revolutionary but its structured and as cliche as it sounds the new year is a great time to set goals with the whole year as a blank canvas.

For us to achieve our aims and ambitions, there are four key techniques that will help us succeed:

Having the right kind of plan
Telling friends and family
Focusing on the benefits
Rewarding ourselves along the way

So what we are about to do is use this unique motivational journal:

I would recommend buying a little journal or copy this out and put them up somewhere you can see them.

1.What is your overall goal

My overall goal is to:

2. Create a step by step plan

Break your goal into a maximum of 5 smaller steps, each step should be associated with a goal that is concrete, measurable, realistic and time-based. Think about how you will achieve each step and the reward that you will give yourself when you do. The rewards can be anything you like as long as it isn't hugely counterproductive to your overall goal.

Step 1

My 1st sub goal is…
I believe I can achieve this goal because…
To achieve this sub goal I will…
I will achieve this by the following date…
My reward for achieving this will be…

Step 2

My 2nd sub goal is…
I believe I can achieve this goal because…
To achieve this sub goal I will…
I will achieve this by the following date…
My reward for achieving this will be…

Step 3

My 3rd sub goal is…
I believe I can achieve this goal because…
To achieve this sub goal I will…
I will achieve this by the following date…
My reward for achieving this will be…

Step 4

My 4th sub goal is…
I believe I can achieve this goal because…
To achieve this sub goal I will…
I will achieve this by the following date…
My reward for achieving this will be…

Step 5

My 5th sub goal is…
I believe I can achieve this goal because…
To achieve this sub goal I will…
I will achieve this by the following date…
My reward for achieving this will be…

3. What are the benefits of Achieving you overall goal?

List 3 important benefits, focusing on how much better your life will be for you and those around you, Focus on your benifits of the future not focusing on the negative aspects of your current situation.

Benefit 1:

Benifit 2:

Benefit 3:

4. Go Public

Now you need to tell your friends, family or me about your goals, the greater the public declaration the more likely you are to achieve it. Not only will you be accountable but your friends and family are likely to support you when the going gets tough.

Give this a go and feel free to start by telling me your goal when you go public.
